Martyn Brown: An essay on B.C.’s housing crisis and what to do about it
I can only describe this essay as a proverbial ‘mic drop’ on the real estate climate in Vancouver. The situation is so bad, and the current government so intransigent, that because of this one issue I’ll probably have to vote NDP.
Seriously.
Good analysis, but this is a debate Vancouver should have had about 12-15 years ago. Instead, the “If you don’t like it, you’re a lazy loser who should work harder or get the fuck out” crowd took over the culture of Vancouver, not just the debate.
In any case, it’s doubtful an NDP government could do anything substantial about the problem. Primarily because the people they’d be taxing can afford ANY amount of tax penalty that could conceivably be levied against them, but also because there are just too many people who are perfectly happy with things just the way they are, and who, if anything, think that Vancouver still isn’t expensive enough.
